The other day I was fondly remembering the awkwardness that was adolescence. (Okay let's be serious, I'm still pretty awkward)

Anyway. One key awkward thing about my teenage years was being one of the only public schooled kids at my church and youth group. The rest either went to private school or were home schooled.

Although it was wonderful and some of those other kids became my closest friends, I sometimes felt out of place. And I can remember a few instance when it was made very clear to me that individuals felt I was getting a poor education, and that they felt very sorry for me.

*Fast forward to 2011: I still regularly fist pump for the public school system. However, I've come to the conclusion that there are pros and cons to every kind of education method, and that it is very important to respect families in whatever decision they make for their child/children. And so I fist pump for everything.

Also, I am over the remarks that were made to me so many years ago (because we are all sinners and I cringe to the think of the damage I've caused with my own words in that hormonal time) but I needed to include them because they reinforced the cartoon. At the end of the day, it's really all about the cartoon. I don't even normally write this much.*

*And yes, I did have pink spiky hair and dress like that. I was... finding myself... I guess...

Car Oil

I don't know why it took me 6 years of changing my car's oil to realize this, but last Saturday while watching the dirty oil spill into the pan, it occurred to me that there was something beautiful about it.

I saved a bottle of dirty motor oil and this is my first experiment with it. I mixed a little black pigment in there and just fooled around.

This is where I go for corporate worship on Sunday mornings.

In the process of designing brochures for my church, I needed to make a simple map so that people more or less can figure out how to get there. (This would be like, the thing you look at before you get a chance to just google map it).
Of course this map was cropped so that it doesn't look like streets just disappear into nowhere.

And then I figured that the Imperfect Prose Community and other blog followers should all get to see where I go to church, even though some of them don't even live in the United States and so it means nothing.

Last May my beautiful mother had a cardiac arrest. I obsessively drew her through the whole process because I'm too old for a security blanket. A sketchbook is the next best thing.

For the record, the doctors were amazing, and she's alive now and pretty much back to her normal self.

I comfort myself by drawing.
I spent last summer with my family in a variety of medical waiting rooms. The first waiting room was part of the Cardiac ICU. All around me, families sat with anxiety as they waited for their turn to come so they could spend their allotted 10 minutes per hour staring at their parent/spouse/sibling laying in a bed looking completely lifeless.
We all sat waiting to hear whether our loved one was going to make it. I listened to a family counselor explain to a family that the doctors did all they could, and that he was very sorry.
Here are a few of the things I poured into my sketchbook that first week.

I'm starting my Senior Project (opening night is Friday, April 15th, get pumped) and I was looking through all of my old sketchbooks trying to figure out who I am now as an artist and what kind of materials I should use and so on. I came across this page from sometime in high school:

And I thought about how much I like to use makeup in my art, and how I like to involve as much of my body as possible when I'm painting/drawing, and I needed to know if I could draw with lipstick prints. And I think there is possibility here. (there is also nail polish and eye shadow in this because I only have one shade of lipstick (but not for long))

Final for "Drawing and Painting for the Theatre": Listen to an unlabeled audio clip (no voices, just music) and come up with a stage scene to go along with it.
It was interesting to see all of the difference ideas people came up with; there were some winter scenes, forests, another desert, palaces, etc. In the end the audio clip went with a winter scene, but luckily we weren't graded on our guessing abilities.

My Swanky Studio

This is a different kind of post. No artwork here, but I wanted to take the time to show off the groovy studio I've been working in for the past month (and will have until May). Okay, so it isn't MY studio; it's a cube I share it with fellow illustrators Adam and Sarah. We have 2 photographers in the one adjacent cube and 2 sculptors in the other adjacent cube.

*Please note: I didn't do anything special to get this studio, I have impeccable timing and happen to be comfortable stalking all the right authority figures in order to get what I want.*

This may not be the most appropriate way to honor this day, but this is my all-time favorite propaganda poster from WWI.

Eating and Drinking

The region that is home to Florence has one of the most versatile and varied-form cooking traditions in Italy, that we have already mentioned in our tourists’ guide to Tuscany. We are going to try and provide a more specific view, limiting ourselves to the city of Florence and the area immediately around it.

Florentine cooking is linked to a tradition of simple dishes prepared with genuine, tasty but plain ingredients, which has recently been reconsidered by the world of more sophisticated cuisine. Cereals, bread, vegetable and oil (which must be extra-virgin) are the basis of many recipes that just have to be tried in one of the many restaurants in Florence.

Simple food, such as cannellini beans and other vaguely repulsive ingredients such as tripe and livers are transformed into pleasant, tasty dishes, served on both stalls and in local inns and also in luxury restaurants. We can therefore find: fagioli all'uccelletto (beans), boiled and then fried in oil and tomato sauce; trippa alla fiorentina, (tripe) covered in tomato and grated parmesan cheese; lampredotto, the darkest part of tripe, used for soups and risottos, but also liked by many locals as a filling for a sandwich; crostini toscani with liver paté. And the unforgettable "fiorentina" a cut of meat from the Chianina cow, famous worldwide, to be tried in any restaurant in Florence.

Chemistry Book

I love working in the chemistry department and being surrounded by ridiculously smart people. A while ago, a chemist in the department needed a cover for his book; just something to send to publishers so they knew what he had in mind, and then they could have their artists make the real thing. He knew exactly what he wanted but couldn't navigate around photoshop, so I stepped in and helped him out (this is exactly what an illustrator does, right? We climb inside your head and pull the image out and put it in front of you). What do you know, the publishers went with my design and the book is now in print!

Fun fact you may not know about me: When I'm not bathing in charcoal and glitter, I work at the Chemistry Outreach Center at UConn. We promote science.

They let me design the regional Middle School Science Bowl t-shirts (and some other things). This is this year's shirt, created in Adobe Illustrator, along with this year's volunteers (can you find me?!) and Jonathan. Yes, Jonathan came, so you KNOW it was a big deal.

Perspective Exercise

Tonight in Advanced Figure we had one model, one pose, and we had to draw her twice in the same space.
I haven't really got the whole perspective thing down yet, but cheer me on as I learn.

For Advanced Figure Drawing, our homework was to draw figures in a realized space.
My brothers posed for the photo and I drew from that. It's 5ish' wide, but I didn't really measure carefully.
Materials: charcoal (chunk & compressed mostly, and some white), acrylic paint, water, and Coca Cola

Longboard

For my Digital Media class we had to design a skateboard with Adobe Illustrator (this was very early in the semester when I didn't have much experience with the program, as you can see my design is very primitive) and I asked my dad for an idea and of course he said his surfboard on a woody with a beach-like scene in the background. After the semester ended I painted his homemade longboard for Christmas. Not the same shape but close enough that the concept art worked.

Acrylic and polyurethane.

I had a lot of fun with this, so if there are any skateboarders out there that want to bedazzle their skateboards or longboards, let me know.

3 block woodcut. I carved 3 different blocks of

wood (all different) and inked them each up with a color (which I mixed my very self, in case you thought these came straight out of the can) and then printed (with a spoon for the yellow and black, a press for the pink) them onto the same piece of rice paper.

Digital Media Final - Part 2

"Self Portrait" again (It was the assignment, I'm not a total narcissist, really). First I did a rough sketch of myself in pencil then sharpie, then I scanned it into Illustrator and made a few adjustments and plopped in the colors, and finally I placed it in Photoshop and did some shading and such, mostly with an opaque brush.

"Self Portrait" - Photoshop collage of things I like (or that are important to me) that I own or have pictures of (Sometimes I feel like such a hardcore rebel when I end a sentence or clause with a preposition).

I may have touched up some of the photos or adjusted color, but I didn't change much.
